This little studio maternity photography session was just pure perfection. When they called to schedule their maternity session, I was so thrilled. Mama is an expert in fine art and having someone who knows photography and fine art choose me to photograph their growing family is such a privilege.
Maternity sessions are very quickly becoming my favorite session to photograph. The celebration, joy, and nervous excitement that precedes these types of sessions is something I love documenting and creating, whether that be in the studio or on-location for my portrait sessions.
Here are a few of my favs. from this lovely summer, natural-light family photography session.

Ever since opening my Charlotte Newborn Photography Studio, I have been finding myself using more and more creams and neutral colors. I love bright and meaningful photographs of newborns and families, images that will stand the test of time. In my studio, I carry some of my favorite newborn photography vendors, like Luneberry, Baby Bliss Props, and One Two Sheep. I have two closets full of some of the best swaddle blankets, rugs and layering pieces. I have scoured local fabric stores, easy shops and vendors that create products specifically for newborn photography studios.
This sweet family visited my Charlotte Newborn Photography Studio recently and I had the best time photographing their baby boy in some of my favorite neutrals. I used a few soft whites and greys to bring out that soft newborn skin. I love how neutral they are. How they utilize negative space to bring your focus to the baby, and not to “stuff”.
Please enjoy a sampling of my favorite images from their studio newborn session.
Dreamy Maternity Session | Charlotte/Ballantyne Maternity Photographer | Maternity-Baby Photographer
Photographing mothers-to-be has become one of my passions this year.
In January I lost my mother to a very brief and sudden turn of events. My father passed away 6+ years ago, and to not have my very vibrant mother beside me and my family to help navigate all the years I have left with my little children has been a hard realization. This is another blog post, entirely.
I’ve been a photographer in the Charlotte area since 2012 when I officially launched this business (I’ve been in photography and art/creative-writing for a LONG time). But since then, I’ve maybe only had 5 requests to photograph maternity sessions, as opposed to hundreds of newborn sessions.
I’m not kidding. It’s a staggering gulf between the two. And this makes no sense to me. We place all the emphasis on the baby (which it clearly deserves!) but almost none on the mother. And this goes WAY beyond maternity photographs. We receive very little postpartum care. Maybe a well visit almost 6 WEEKS after we’ve given birth. No one checks if we are really okay. How we are handling not sleeping at all, while also being thrown into breastfeeding for the first time.
And I think this really comes down to we only value women/mothers with our words. Not with our actions. We have all the language that we need to lift mothers up, celebrate them, care for them, ect. without really following through on any of it. So SO SOOOOO many mothers come to me having to “convince” their husbands that photography is worth it for them and the baby. This seems ludicrous to me. So I determined to do a little small part in the effort to help mothers feel more valued in this life, which is why I began offering COMPLIMENTARY maternity sessions with your booked newborn session. And you know what? Since then I’ve photographed 10 maternity sessions in just 3 months.
And I am so thrilled to offer maternity photography! I love these sessions so much. Studio or on-location, celebrating and feeling proud of what your body has been able to do through the grace of God is nothing short of wonderful!
Just a few short weeks ago, I photographed this lovely mother-to-be at one of my favorite locations near Ballantyne. Here are some of my personal favorites from this dreamy maternity session.
Just 2 short years ago I photographed this sweet little family when their little daughter arrived. I actually photographed their sweet courthouse wedding as well (but that’s another blog post!) I include maternity sessions (complete with dress selections for mothers and spouse/partner and children) to take a lot of the guess work out of what to wear to your maternity photography session. It can be such a hassle to try and order dresses, or to make it to the store, and truthfully I love including these in sessions. It makes it a breezy restful time for new mamas (and rest is in short supply these days!)
I cannot wait to photograph their new little boy come September for his newborn photography session. In the meantime, here are a few of my favs. from this dreamy Ballantyne/Charlotte NC area maternity session.
